Ingredients

  • Brown lentils - 150 grams
  • Vegetable broth - 500 ml
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Bell pepper - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
  • Worcestershire sauce - 1 tablespoon (vegan if desired)
  • Brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Smoked paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Hamburger buns - 2

Steps

  1. Rinse the lentils under cold water and drain.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the lentils and vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until lentils are tender. Drain any excess liquid.
  3. While the lentils are cooking, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent.
  4. Add minced garlic and chopped bell pepper to the skillet, and sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until softened.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 2 minutes to combine flavors.
  6. Add the cooked lentils to the skillet and mix well. Cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the mixture to heat through and thicken slightly.
  7. Toast the hamburger buns lightly if desired. Serve the lentil mixture on the bottoms of the buns, topping with the other half of the bun.
