Ingredients
- Brown lentils - 150 grams
- Vegetable broth - 500 ml
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Bell pepper - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
- Worcestershire sauce - 1 tablespoon (vegan if desired)
- Brown sugar - 1 teaspoon
- Smoked paprika - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Hamburger buns - 2
Steps
- Rinse the lentils under cold water and drain.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the lentils and vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until lentils are tender. Drain any excess liquid.
- While the lentils are cooking, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent.
- Add minced garlic and chopped bell pepper to the skillet, and sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 2 minutes to combine flavors.
- Add the cooked lentils to the skillet and mix well. Cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the mixture to heat through and thicken slightly.
- Toast the hamburger buns lightly if desired. Serve the lentil mixture on the bottoms of the buns, topping with the other half of the bun.
