Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • Unsalted butter - 100 grams, cold and cubed
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Water - 60 milliliters, ice-cold
  • Ground beef - 200 grams, Halal
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Cumin - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the cold butter and work it into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the ice-cold water, mixing until a dough forms. Shape the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet, breaking the beef apart with a spoon. Cook until the beef is browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in cumin, paprika, black pepper, and salt. Cook for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool.
  6. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 3 mm thick.
  7. Cut out circles (around 10 cm in diameter) using a cutter or a bowl. Place a tablespoon of the beef mixture in the center of each circle.
  8. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
  9. Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot.
