Ingredients
- All-purpose flour - 250 grams
- Unsalted butter - 100 grams, cold and cubed
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 60 milliliters, ice-cold
- Ground beef - 200 grams, Halal
- Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Cumin - 1 teaspoon
- Paprika - 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the cold butter and work it into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the ice-cold water, mixing until a dough forms. Shape the dough into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet, breaking the beef apart with a spoon. Cook until the beef is browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in cumin, paprika, black pepper, and salt. Cook for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat and let it cool.
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 3 mm thick.
- Cut out circles (around 10 cm in diameter) using a cutter or a bowl. Place a tablespoon of the beef mixture in the center of each circle.
- Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
- Place the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot.
