Ingredients

  • Okra - 200 grams
  • Cornmeal - 1/2 cup
  • All-purpose flour - 1/4 cup
  • Buttermilk - 1/2 cup
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Cayenne pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - for frying (about 1 cup)

Steps

  1. Wash the okra thoroughly and trim the ends. Cut the okra into 1/2-inch slices.
  2. In a bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper to make the batter.
  3. Dip the sliced okra into buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the cornmeal mixture until well coated.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F).
  5. Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
  6. Fry the okra for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.
  7. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried okra and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve hot as a side dish.
