Ingredients

  • Large onion - 1
  • All-purpose flour - 1 cup (125g)
  • Cornstarch - 1/4 cup (30g)
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cold water - 3/4 cup (180ml)
  • Vegetable oil - for frying

Steps

  1. Peel the onion and slice it into 1/2-inch thick rings, separating the rings from each other.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Gradually whisk in the cold water until the batter is smooth and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F).
  5. Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place it into the hot oil.
  6. Fry the onion rings in batches for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning them occasionally for even cooking.
  7. Once cooked, remove the onion rings using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
