Ingredients

  • Ground beef (80% lean) - 400 grams
  • Kosher salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Onion powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Hamburger buns - 2
  • Cheddar cheese (slices) - 2
  • Onion (medium, sliced into rings) - 1
  • All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
  • Cornstarch - 1/4 cup
  • Beer (or sparkling water) - 1/2 cup
  • Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) - 1 cup
  • Ketchup - to taste
  • Mustard - to taste
  • Pickles - to taste
  • Lettuce - 2 leaves

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Form into two equal-sized patties.
  2. Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Add a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
  3. While the patties are cooking, prepare the crispy onion rings. In one bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. In another bowl, pour the beer (or sparkling water).
  4. Dip the onion rings first in the flour mixture, then in the beer, and back into the flour mixture to coat them well.
  5. In a deep skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Fry the coated onion rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster.
  7. Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the cooked patty, crispy onion rings, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. Top with the other half of the bun.
