Ingredients

  • Red lentils - 150 grams
  • Water - 500 ml
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Carrot - 1 medium, grated
  • Cilantro - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chickpea flour - 50 grams
  • Olive oil - for frying

Steps

  1. Rinse the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the lentils are tender and most of the water is absorbed. Let cool slightly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked lentils, minced garlic, chopped onion, grated carrot, chopped cilantro, cumin powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until combined.
  4. Add the chickpea flour to the lentil mixture and mix until it holds together. If too wet, add a little more flour as needed.
  5. Form the mixture into small patties, about 2-3 inches in diameter.
  6. Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  7. Fry each patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the patties from the pan and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm.
