Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Cornstarch - 3 tablespoons
  • Panko breadcrumbs - 1 cup
  • Garlic powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Onion powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free) - 1 tablespoon
  • Honey or maple syrup - 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Drain the tofu and press it between paper towels to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes.
  3. Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes or nugget shapes.
  4. In a bowl, mix together cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together olive oil, soy sauce, and honey or maple syrup.
  6. Add the tofu cubes to the oil mixture and toss gently to coat, then sprinkle the cornstarch mixture over the tofu and toss until evenly coated.
  7. Roll the coated tofu pieces in panko breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully covered.
  8. Place the breaded tofu nuggets on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them for even cooking.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the nuggets are golden brown and crispy.
