  • Barley, pearl - 50 grams
  • Carrot, diced - 1 medium (approximately 70 grams)
  • Celery, diced - 1 stalk (approximately 40 grams)
  • Onion, chopped - 1 small (approximately 70 grams)
  • Garlic, minced - 2 cloves
  • Beef broth - 500 ml
  • Bay leaf - 1
  • Thyme, dried - 1 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Water - 1 liter

Steps

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, diced carrot, and celery. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the cubed beef. Brown the beef on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the barley, beef broth, bay leaf, thyme, and bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 40-45 minutes, or until the barley is tender and the beef is cooked through.
  6. Remove the bay leaf, season with salt and pepper to taste, and serve hot.
