Ingredients
- canned black beans - 1 cup, drained and rinsed
- ripe avocado - 1 medium, peeled and pitted
- bread crumbs - 1/2 cup
- onion - 1/4 cup, finely chopped
- garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- cumin - 1 teaspoon
- paprika - 1/2 teaspoon
- salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- olive oil - 1 tablespoon
- whole wheat burger buns - 2
- lettuce leaves - 2
- tomato - 1 medium, sliced
- red onion - 1/4 cup, sliced
- sriracha sauce - 2 tablespoons (optional)
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans and avocado together until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
- Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the bowl, and mix until combined.
- Gradually stir in the bread crumbs until the mixture holds together. If too wet, add more bread crumbs as needed.
- Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape into patties.
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- While the patties are cooking, toast the whole wheat burger buns lightly.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on each bun, followed by the avocado bean patty, sliced tomato, and red onion.
- Drizzle with sriracha sauce if desired, and top with the other half of the bun. Serve immediately.
